Taking the checklist to the DV-CP706 is a simple way to reveal its all-around home theater appeal. You can begin by noting its capability to store, change, and play up to six video and audio discs. Then, add another check mark for being the first Onkyo six-disc changer to be able to upscale standard DVDs all the way to high-definition 1080p resolution. And should you connect this player to an A/V receiver with highly advanced scaling capabilities, you can also choose to output the video at a native resolution of 480i. It also employs Onkyo's VLSC circuitry for noise-free digital-to-analog audio signal processing, along with user-friendly control functions such as disc navigator. Add to that an impressively robust build - with an isolated circuitry layout to minimize digital noise, a solid fascia, and an ultra-quiet loading mechanism - and you have a six-disc changer that will provide years of move and music entertainment perfectly tailored to your needs.

"Good but quality control issues" 2010-02-05
By Wildonion (Minneapolis)
I mainly bought this player because I have an Onkyo receiver. I had to return the first player I received. I had the same problem as some of the other reviewers, it would not play dvds with minor scratches. I tested 4 rental dvds and only 1 would play. All 4 would play on another dvd player. I do not think this is a "high end" component issue but a "low end" quality control issue.

The replacement player has been working fine so far with cds and rental dvds. I have also tried dvds with jpeg pictures. It requires the right file size and using the hd jpeg setting. It seemed to work best with photos that were 4x6 size at 150 dpi. The full size (2 to 3 megs) photos were displayed smaller, possibly compressed to fit the screen size.

I would say if you already have an Onkyo receiver, this is worth considering. Try a few rental dvds in it to see if it is working correctly. If not, return it for another one, Amazon makes this a pretty easy process.

"So far, I love it!" 2010-01-15

I bought this changer because I really wanted a disc changer for music and this consolidated the DVD player and disk changer into one. It works perfectly well with our Samsung HDTV and old Sony home theater receiver. The picture is great, although I am not an expert. I do see a difference between it and HD channels, but it is not a Blu Ray, so as expected.

"Great convenience... when it worked. Infuriating inconvenience now." 2010-01-03
By C. Wirtz (Alexandria, VA)
Had planned to build an Onkyo branded complete A/V system around this changer. Those plans, and the money Onkyo might have gotten from me, are now in question. The same errors that the other 1 star posters have had are exactly what I've experienced. Bad Disk, skipping, not recognizing a disk is present, freezing, etc. Additionally, like the other posters, this started randomly and infrequently and has progressively gotten worse. It's now a paper weight and with the price of electronics I'm debating on getting it fixed (likely more than a new player). Onkyo should be contacting it's customers and replacing these defective players. Don't be fooled by a positive review. They may have just received their changer. It will get worse for them in time.

 "Stopped reading discs" 2009-12-22
By Luke Kilroy (NC)
I bought this on Amazon and it worked for a few days then stopped reading DVDs and CDs. I will return it and try another brand even though I have been pretty loyal to Onkyo and I currently have an Onkyo reciever. Other reveiwers have had similar problems. I would suggest you stay away from this one.

"Truly doesn't play most rental and high-use DVDs (but warranty service did repair) " 2009-10-22
By J. Jack
As previously posted, this unit will NOT play rental (or even mildly scratched) DVDs. Which is a problem because a number of our DVDs are kids movies and they get scratched with repeadted use. All the problematic DVDs play perfectly fine on a cheapo ($20) DVD player but this "high-end" unit is too much of a prima donna for these DVDs.

---------See Update Below

January 2010 UPDATE:

Took the unit to an authorized repair shop and they honored the warranty (I originally purchased it from Amazon). After the repair, the unit is AMAZING! No problems whatsoever and the sound and picture quality is far superior to cheapo DVD players! Repair center said some parts with laser, etc. tend to come loose with shipping and handling from online retailers. Took them a week to get the required parts and repair... all for free and worth the wait! If you're having problems with this unit definitely try taking it to an authorized repair shop! Would give it 5 stars if it came this way out of the box!

Everything seems to be fine, the only complaint I have is that I'm afraid of breaking the DVD door that comes out, seems pretty flimsy.

"Quality - tho' one misstep" 2010-01-07

This is one of the better dvd players out there for the money. Surprisingly, the remote is too small. I'd velcro it to the TV so it doesn't get lost or thrown out with the tv guide.

"Onkyo DV-SP406B Upscaling DVD Player" 2009-12-29
By R. Headrick (Portland, OR)
I bought this Onkyo DV-SP406B upscaling DVD player to replace an aging Toshiba DVD player which wouldn't play some disks correctly, especially double-sided.

I was not interested in BlueRay - they cost too much and many other reviewers have said that their DVDs look better on their upscaling DVD players than on their brand new BlueRay player. And we have large DVD collection.

I also have an Onkyo receiver so it seemed advantageous to get a matching DVD player as there are a few receiver controls on the DVD remote (on/off, muting, volume, and input). We are very happy with this player. It seems to be well built as expected from Onkyo. I know, we've only had it for two months, but we use it a lot. The first day I was freaked out because it displayed sort of green overcast images on out Pioneer HDTV. But, it turned out that the default HDMI input setting on the Pioneer was not set correctly. No fault of Onkyo. Once I got out the Pioneer manual and learned how to change the HDMI input setting to "optimum", the picture looked great.

Others have complained about the remote. I don't know why. I like it. It is lightweight and has a good layout of often used buttons like stop/play/pause/etc.

This player has not stalled or rejected any disk that I have put in it. It'll even play my mp3 video files. Amazing! I highly recommend this player. But, if you have some reason to not get this one, my second choice would have been a Toshiba XD-E500.

We do have a couple of small complaints. It is sort of slow performing simple tasks like on/off and eject. Once you get the disk playing though - no issues. The other is the strange (or just different) way you have to grab onto the disk to remove it. There are only two little slots near the front to insert your thumb or finger into to get "under" the disk. Like other reviewers have said, not a dealer killer but sort of annoying.

I used the free shipping options at Amazon.com and received this in about a week. (This is typical excellent service/shipping from Amazon) I also ordered an AmazonBasics HDMI cable from Amazon. Seems like better quality material than most generic cables. Hope this helps you somehow in your decision to get a new player.

One last note to remember:

You must use a HDMI cable to get upscaling. Upscaling is not available using component cables. (Actually, I think that is true with any upscaling DVD player)

"onkyo better than blue ray" 2009-12-25
By David J. Webb (Huber Heights, OH United States)
I have a Sony Blue Ray player. It went south(broke) after a year and half of very light use. Not all formats play on the Blue Ray Player.

I bought the Onkyo dvd player because it upgrades the image to almost blue ray quality. It was highly rated by other users and even some consumer groups. It appears to play anything I put in it.

I normally get most of my DVDs from the local library. I honestly could not tell a difference between the quality of these DVDs from the quality that the Blue Ray was putting out. True I am using Plazma and not LCD. It is a standard 16:9 format. I think the key is the HDMI cord between the DVD player and the set.

If you are not using HDMI cords it will probably not work for you. Using the cord, there is very little difference between the upgraded image and the image off of a Blue Ray player. The difference is the lack of frustration. This DVD player plays almost any format. I have not tried any of my MP3 files on it yet. The blue ray is very particular about what it will play. I find this paranoid attitude on the part of Sony to be very stupid. I think they made a machine with perfection in mind. Then they spoiled it with a very paranoid attitude towards copyright on the disks. Blockbuster dvds do not always work on it. Even the blue ray ones do not always work right. Comparing that scene with the Onkyo, all the disks commercially produced work on this unit.

I am very satisfied with the results on this player so far.

 "Another solid Onkyo product" 2009-11-16
By Dave (Orlando, FL)
Not ready to jump on the Blu-Ray train just yet, but I wanted to upgrade my DVD player to one with HDMI so I could take advantage of my Onkyo 507 receiver. I was looking at the 706 changer from Onkyo but there were several reviews all citing problems with reading discs, so I decided on a single tray unit. Their SP506 looked impressive and got great reviews but I wasn't sure that I wanted to spend that much, as was also the case with the Yamaha S-1800. The Yamaha, Oppo (also pretty pricey) and Onkyo were the only ones I found without a single negative review - Toshiba, Samsung, Sony and Pioneer all seem to have their various issues. In the end, I went with the Onkyo because it was cheaper than the Yamaha and would fit perfectly with the receiver. So far it has been impressive. The picture is very crisp and the resolution button on the remote makes it simple to switch between 480/720/1080i/1080p if needed. The audio is excellent as well - I couldn't believe how great DTS soundtracks sounded. So far it has loaded/played DVDs, CDs, CD-Rs, MP3s and DVD-Rs without problem or hesitation. Just as a test, I put in an old scratched-up CD, and it played the entire way through.

If you have a recent HDMI Onkyo receiver, I'd highly recommend this unit - the DVD remote works seamlessly with the receiver functions (and the receiver remote with the DVD functions too) right through the HDMI connection - no need for an RI cable and no coding necessary. It's face is sleek and the depth is compact - might be tough to stack certain compnents on top of it. I have not experienced any extended load times with any format yet, and the operation is quite quiet. One minor con I would mention if I needed to come up with one is that the display is completely different in size and color than that of the receiver, which I found strange - you'd think they would match them purposely. Also, I think I would prefer to have a few additional controls on the face of the player, like the resolution button and maybe a random play for CDs - it appears that you can take care of just about anything of the front panel of the SP506, but you'll need to do it all through the remote with the 406. All things considered, though, this is a solid player from a company with a great reputation.
