"Best Sound System if not for..." 2010-02-09
By Bobby J. Truong (Philadelphia, PA)
Wow...the sounds itself sets it apart from many systems that I listen to. The sounds are crystal clear and right on with the bass perfect and not overwhelming and raucous. I actually enjoyed watching many of my films because of enhanced Blu-Ray picture and top of the line sounds. This has to be the best sound home theater system that I owned and listened to (hands down).

Like many things there's always the cons:

1. The receiver gets awfully hot. I have a nice tv stand with a glass door and rear has a large opening for cords. And after 1 hr of usage this receiver gets so hot that my hands begin to burn when I touch it. So wonder how the longevity of the sound system will last. The room gets hot real fast if there's no circulation.

2. The speakers are real nice but big and bulky. Maybe if they're reduced in size just a tad.

I still rate this a five stars because I am in awe of the sounds

"Great system for the price" 2010-02-07
By M. Hannah (HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA United States)
I have had the system hooked up for about 10 days.

Searching around I saw that I could spend several times the $900 I paid for the system for something that didn't appear to be near as good.

Some reviewers have commented on the packaging. It arrived in one large box attached to its own pallet. Everything was in great condition and it was packed about as well as it could possibly be. There was no noticeable damage on the box. I purchased it from OneCall over Amazon and it arrived in just a few days.

I hooked it up with the wires that came with it and they seem to do fine. The setup was easy and its self-calibration with the included microphone was easy. In fact I have run through that process several times as I have been experimenting with different speaker locations.

The sound from it is great. In fact it takes a little getting used to the realism and realizing that some of the sounds from TV shows are not coming from something else inside the house. It seems to be able to get to a higher volume than I will ever need.

Some reviewers have complained about speaker size. The only one that is particularly large, as far as I am concerned, is the subwoofer. I don't consider the size to be a significant concern as all of the speakers look fine and fit in with the room decor.

I have the inputs going into the HDMI plugs and a single HDMI going from the device to the TV. It switches easily between the different sources using a Harmony One remote, which I also recommend highly. Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote.

I am not an audiophile, so I can't comment on the more technical aspects of the performance, but to me it is a great system and matches well in quality with my Kuro TV. All in all, if you are someone who wants a quick and easy solution for an sound system w/o spending many thousands of dollars, this one is a great bet.

 "Onkyo HT-S9100THX" 2010-01-30
By CaptTurbo (SW Florida)
Every once in a while I come across something that is really special. Something that brings great satisfaction. This unit still makes me smile after a couple months of daily usage. Movies are fantastic at home now.

I matched the Onkyo up with a Sharp 52" LCD HDTV. The Sharp has 5 HDMI inputs which really simplified the wiring. I love how easy it is to switch between components by using the Onkyo remote. Really convenient!

I read a lot of reviews before buying this HTIB and would like to thank those that took the time to describe this system so well. I agree with most of what I read in those reviews. One point I don't agree on is that many say that you need heavier speaker wire. The wire that comes with the system does seem pretty light but it works just fine. If the runs of wire are long enough for your room, save your money and use what came with it. I needed more length for the rears so I just spliced in what I needed.

The speakers are pretty big but the sound they produce justifies that for me. I love battle scenes on this system. You will find yourself right in the middle of things with bullets whipping past you from all sides. Explosions heard from all directions! Earth shattering base from the 12" sub woofer. This system blows me away. I can't believe that I bought it for less then a grand! Free shipping at the time as well.

I mounted the front three speakers on screws directly in the wall. They are substantial so I made sure to sink the screws into studs. The sides and rears I put on 31" stands which seems to work fine. I did put some hook and loop fasteners between the speakers and the platforms to elliminate the possibility of accidentally knocking them off.

As other reviewers have said, the set-up feature with the microphone is wonderful! With this feature I didn't have to have the side speakers the same distance away. For my room it just wasn't possible. My right side speaker is about 15' away and the left side is no more then 4' away but they both sound very balanced because the receiver "knows" where each speaker is and how much juice to pump to them!

Rather then go on and on (though I certainly could) about how fantastic the HT-S9100THX is, let me just say that I can't imagine a better sounding system that would be anywhere near this price point. This has to be the most bang for your buck by far. I would definitely buy it again and give it 5 stars. If you are on the fence, by all means pull the trigger!

 "Subwoofer Hum" 2010-01-20
By J. Luke (DC)
I had been hearing a hum from the subwoofer which was much louder when I ran a space heater. I tested whether it was a grounding issue by using a 3-prong to 2-prong AC plug converter. This eliminated most of the hum. Not wanting to leave the system ungrounded, I purchased the Ebtech Hum X, plugged all of my components (cable box, receiver, subwoofer, Blu-ray player, HD TV) into a single surge protector and plugged it into the Hum X. There's only a hardly noticeable hum now from the subwoofer, even with the space heater running. I'll try an in-line ground loop isolator ($10 from Radio Shack) between the receiver and subwoofer to see if it eliminates the remainder.

BTW, for front speaker stands, I got the Benno CD tower from IKEA, cut it in half and added a base for stability. The brown-black is about the same color. Functional and looks good too.
