"A Solid and Sensible Shelf Unit - Good Value" 2009-10-11
By Mark S. Deneen (Ferndale, Ca)
I replaced a cabinet full of high-end audio gear with this unit. I was sick of all the complexity and the space and maintenance of the other gear. This unit appealed to be because of it's integration of several components, its small size and the Onkyo brand, which has a good longstanding reputation. I was not disappointed.

Here's three things I really liked about this unit. First, the controls make sense and there are not a billion of them like most receivers. I was able to operate most functions out of the box without reading the manual. My wife also was able to do this. Too many electronics today have far more tiny buttons than you will never use in a lifetime - this one is pretty clean. And importantly, the VOLUME setting is a big round knob! Halleluja!! No small arrows to punch UP and DOWN for volume! Secondly, the all-in-done CD/DVD/CD-ROM drive is simply great. You put in any disc, it knows what it is, and you hit the familiar PLAY arrow. The Jog/Shuttle dial is a nifty feeling way to skip to the track or selection you want. And third, the unit looks clean, and it is very robust and solid feeling, for its 30W per channel. It doesn't feel like a plastic toy.

The sound quality is quite good considering the speakers are rather smallish. I was a tad disappointed in the speakers - not a lot, just a little. They do not feel as solid as I might have expected. To get a well balanced sound on my shelf, I had to engage the bass augmentation switch one notch. My room is 18 x 20. If you had a much bigger room, these speakers might not fill the room. I do not plan on using the XM radio features, so no comment on that. The FM tuner worked nicely given the state of FM these days, and was easy to set, although setting the presets did require a trip to the manual. This is one area of the firmware I didn't care for, but since it is not used too frequently it is hard to complain.

At the end of the day, is this worthy of the price? I have to say YES with no reservations. It's well made, easy to operate, sounds very good and doesn't take up too much space, which is after all, one of the major reasons for getting a unit like this! Good job Onkyo!

"it blew after a year, and Onkyo didn't care" 2008-09-28
By David Lawton (St Louis, MO United States)
I was pleased with this at first. I did not use it heavily - it was a bedroom system, not my main one. After just over one year, so just out of warranty,it gave a loud bang and then made no sound. I did all obvious troubleshooting and then called Onkyo - they just said that it was my problem, and to take it to any service shop at my expense. Their closest Onkyo specialist service was six hundred miles away. Unacceptable. Save your money - buy something else.

"Open the box before your ability to return to Amazon runs out" 2008-07-12
By Dusty (Joliet, IL)
I received this as a gift and didn't open the box because I didn't have anywhere to put it until after the 30 days to return to Amazon expired. The CD/DVD drawer on the unit didn't work. I couldn't register the unit with Onkyo (required to get warranty work) because they didn't have a record of the serial number (?). The unit had a date of manufacture of 2005 - it was bought in mid-2007 so this was kind of odd. It was very difficult to get the unit in - the place was over fifty miles away and was open during work hours. Not only was the power unit broken and had to be replaced but the inside of the unit was dirty. There is a good chance I paid a new price for a refurbished unit that was never repaired. The stereo sounds good but now I hope nothing else goes wrong since the warranty expired before I heard it play the first CD.

 "A good compromise" 2008-06-27
By Dominick J. Paolillo (Ithaca, NY)
I am happy I bought this set. It is versatile and has a fine sound. The unit is compact, the sound is full-sized. The good things I read in reviews of this item are true for the unit I received. Plus, I can not believe that what I hear in theater listening mode is coming from only two speakers.

"Better Than Most Costing Substantially More!!!" 2008-02-17
By MagnumMan (Florida)
Got mine for $93 on clearance at Circuit City who seems to have a policy of dropping everything at least 60% if it hangs around for a year or more. I originally thought of buying it at the previous sale of $199 but was glad I waited and got it for $106 less!

This unit replaces a previous Onkyo that still played like a champ but couldn't handle SACD or MP3s, let alone video DVDs.

So far, so good. Digests everythings I put in the CD drawer although it has a nasty tendency not to show how many songs are on a disk nor does it show titles and artists unless you know how to manipulate the remote for the on screen menu.

Speaking of such, be aware that the remote is a monster of 50 or more buttons that Albert Einstein couldn't figure out.

Sound reproduction is good and the CD player seems quiet with the only detected hiss being on an analog CD made from an old vinyl record (so I imagine most of the noise was from the vinyl original and not the CD).

By the way, if you want deeper, booming bass than you had been opt for the subwoofer. Theatre mode does right fine for me in that respect.

As always, a class act from Onkyo and, by the way, it comes with 1 year warranty! May not sound like much, but most only come with 90 days!
